Bereavement & Terminal Illness
This is such a sensitive and often emotional time for people who have lost a loved one and inherit their belongings. A terminal illness can also be a time that someone may want to declutter so their loved ones know about important items they want passed on.
With either of these things it is important that time is taken to go through your items with care and love. It can be easier for people to do this with someone who is not emotionally attached to their belongings.
When items are inherited it can be very difficult to separate what you love and what your loved one valued. I can suggest charities that will cherish them and use them for learning or we can look into selling sites. Memory boxes are also a good avenue to go down so items can be stored lovingly for the future or their next owner.
FAQ
I’ve recently lost my Mum, and I’m not ready to go through everything just yet. Can you help?
As long as there are a good number of items, you’re ready to tackle them, yes. If there are some things too emotionally charged (or things we come across that you’re not ready to deal with), we can park those for a later date or box up for another time. I offer gentle, compassionate support to help you through your loved one’s belongings at a pace that suits you.
Can you help me decide what to keep and what you let go of?
Yes, with great care. I’ll help you honour their memory while making thoughtful decisions on those items that truly matter to you. I generally suggest setting up a memory box so that items you want to keep, but not use or display, have a rightful place.
Do you work with people who are terminally ill?
Yes, I’ve supported clients who want to get their affairs and spaces in order to bring peace and clarity – both for themselves and their loved ones. Whether this be paperwork, setting up a memory box or going through some sensitive cards/items which they wouldn’t want their loved ones to see.
